Sir: In the wake of the tragedy in Kasur, I can’t help but remember Shaheed Salmaan Taseer and his courage. When he met Mukhtar Mai, he asked her to put her hand on his daughter’s head as a gesture of respect towards Mukhtar and to express his desire that his daughter follow in her footsteps. That she learn courage and resilience from this lady who was violated in the most horrific manner. We live in a distorted society where the victim is blamed for the sins of the perpetrator. People will continue to fall prey to this tribal mentality unless those with courage speak up. I am reminded of Salmaan Taaseer’s favourite quote: mera azm itna buland hai ke parae sholon ka dar nahin mujhe khauf aatish-e-gul se hai ye kahin chaman ko jala na de We lost our radiant flower, our ‘last man standing’, but we will never lose his spirit.
