GUJRANWALA: An anti-corruption team Saturday arrested a Building Department SDO on graft charges from Sialkot after an inquiry report found him responsible for the collapse of the building of a girls’ primary school in 2015. In its report, the inspection team found that low-quality material was used in the construction due to which the building collapsed. In the light of the inquiry report, a case has been registered against officers of Building Department and the contractor. Anti corruption teams investigated the matter and it was revealed that Building Department SDO Sialkot Muhammad Bashir and four other officials allegedly used low-quality material in the construction of the building. Anti corruption team also gave opportunity to the accused to clear their position but they did not clear the allegations. After approval from the Punjab Anti-Corruption DG Muzaffar Ali Ranjha, circle officers Amir Hussain Sandhu along with his team raided arrested the accused SDO from the Sialkot. Other accused involved in the case are XENs Abdul Ghafur, Rana Ghulam Mujitaba, and Sub-engineer Javed Iqbal have already been arrested. District bar polls postponed: Meanwhile, the Gujranwala District Bar election has been postponed due to a clash between two groups of lawyers. When the polling started on Saturday, one of the groups alleged that unauthorised people were allowed to enter the polling station. Subsequently, the polling was stopped for three hours. Later, the election commission postponed the polls after two groups of lawyers exchanged hard words with each other. Separately, Municipal Corporation Opposition Leader Muhammad Yahya Butt along with union councils’ chairmen protested in front of DC Office against poor cleanliness condition in the city. They recorded their protest by sweeping roads themselves and also chanted slogans against the mayor and Solid Waste Management Company officers. They demanded that heaps of garbage might be lifted from city roads and streets otherwise they would hold a sit-in. In yet another incident, a boy died in a road accident near at Pipliwala, Gujranwala. It was said that 12 years old Muzamal was going on a motorcycle rickshaw when the tri-cycle overturned due to speeding. Resultantly, Muzammal received injuries and was rushed to DHQ Hospital where he breathed his last. Published in Daily Times, January 14th 2018.
