The brutal rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab in Kasur that shook the country to its core yesterday on the 10th of January 2018, has called upon those in positions of power to act and deliver justice not only to the innocent girl but all those that came before her as well. Famous Pakistani actress and mother, Mahira Khan was present along with others at the Karachi Press Club, furthering their agenda against the issue of child abuse.
“Those that are sitting in power it is their responsibility to bring justice. It is their responsibility to not just find the man who did this to Zainab, but to all the other cases before that,” said Mahira.
“We have to find a long-term solution, which is that we need to talk about abuse, we have to not associate it with shame. We need to tell our children not to remain silent,” she added.
Mahira said that there was a need to change the curriculum of schools and for the government to have a budget which facilitates discussions on abuse. The leading actress also announced to give free talks on the subject, adding that films, books and pieces of art highlighting child abuse will be focal in inducing a change in people’s attitudes.
She concluded with emphasising on the fact that it was important to convey abusers that the power lies with ‘us’ and not them.
