KARACHI: Speakers asserted that the role of women in the country’s development cannot be ignored as they are an integral part of our society. The interactive seminar on “Role of Working Women in Society” was organised by Karach Union of Journalists at Sindh Assembly Building on Thursday. The seminar was presided over by the Speaker of Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Khan Durrani and attended by parliamentarians, journalists and women from all walks of life including the president of Balkees Bakhtiara, City Superintendent Police Shehla Quraishi, president Director Aurat Foundation, Mehnaz Rehman, Member of Standing committee of Woman Development and MPA, Rana Ansar, and President of KUJ, Afsar Imran. Underlining the importance of education for women, they said , providing education to a woman is equal to literate whole society. Signalling change in the mindset as regards to women’s rights, the Sindh Assembly has played a major role in pro-women legislation and set a precedent for other provinces, “Lack of implementation of such laws and their awareness in society on the level of the masses can enhance the confidence of women to come out and make their space in society”. The three laws passed by the Sindh Assembly including ‘Domestic Violence (Prevention & Protection) Act 2013’, ‘Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act 2013’ and ‘Sindh Commission on the Status of Women Act, 2015’ is a landmark achievement”, said speakers adding that their implementation was the foremost responsibility of the relevant departments. “Signaling change in the mindset regarding the rights of women, the Sindh Assembly has played a major role in pro-women legislation and setting a precedent for other provinces”, they said. Women must be provided a safe atmosphere and flexible working-hours in where they could work with the peace of mind.
