Jordan fan crowd crush leaves one dead

Published on: June 23, 2026 11:31 PM

One person was killed and eight others injured in a stampede during a public gathering in central Amman. The incident occurred as fans watched Jordan’s World Cup match against Algeria. The event highlights the risks of overcrowding during large public screenings of major sporting events.

According to Jordan News Agency, the stampede took place at Hashemite Square in the capital. Large crowds had gathered to watch Jordan’s 2–1 defeat to Algeria. The sudden congestion led to a crowd crush during the match screening.

Emergency teams transported nine injured people to hospital following the incident. One of the injured later died, while the remaining individuals sustained minor to moderate injuries. Authorities said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fatality.

The Public Security Directorate said the situation developed due to heavy crowd movement in a densely packed area. Officials are reviewing safety arrangements at public viewing sites across the capital. The incident has raised concerns about crowd control measures during major sporting events.

Jordan had drawn significant public attention as the team participated in its first World Cup. Large gatherings were reported across Amman during the match. Authorities are expected to reassess future fan zones to prevent similar tragedies.
