Karachi maid arrested after alleged gold theft

Published on: June 17, 2026 3:45 PM

KARACHI: Police have arrested a maid accused of stealing 20 tolas of gold jewellery from a house in Karachi and recovered part of the stolen valuables during the investigation, officials said on Wednesday.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Asifa, allegedly stole 20 tolas of gold from a residence on June 12. Following the incident, a case was registered at Risala Police Station, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.

Police said the suspect was apprehended during an intelligence-based targeted operation conducted after the registration of the case. During the arrest, law enforcement officials recovered six tolas of the stolen gold from her possession.

Investigators revealed that the suspect allegedly sold one gold set to a jeweller in Hub for approximately Rs2.15 million. Police further claimed that additional gold jewellery worth around Rs200,000 was sold to another jeweller in the same area.

According to investigators, the money obtained from the sale of the stolen jewellery was allegedly used to purchase a house in Moach Goth. Police also said that some of the remaining jewellery had reportedly been deposited with a jeweller for safekeeping.

Authorities are continuing efforts to recover the remaining stolen gold and identify all individuals who may have been involved in purchasing or handling the jewellery.

The latest case comes months after two major domestic theft incidents were reported in Karachi, allegedly involving housemaids.

Earlier this year, police reported the theft of more than 115 tolas of gold jewellery from two homes located in Mohammad Ali Society and Bahadurabad. The incidents were described as among the largest domestic theft cases reported in the city during 2026.

In one of those cases, more than 100 tolas of gold jewellery, estimated to be worth over Rs45 million, was allegedly stolen from a residence in Mohammad Ali Society.

Police have urged residents to thoroughly verify domestic employees and report suspicious activity to help prevent such incidents.
