Trump, Qatar Emir express hope after Iran agreement

Published on: June 16, 2026 4:31 PM

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani voiced optimism about the Middle East after meeting US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit in France. He said the newly announced Iran agreement could support regional stability and cooperation. The development matters because it could ease tensions and affect countries across the Middle East.

During the meeting, both leaders discussed regional security, investment opportunities, and ongoing developments in the region. Sheikh Tamim praised Trump’s leadership during a critical period and expressed confidence in future diplomatic progress. He said continued efforts could help achieve significant gains for regional peace and stability.

Meanwhile, Trump described the agreement with Iran as fair and beneficial. He stressed that the deal clearly prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The US president also dismissed reports that Washington would invest financially in Iran, calling such claims inaccurate and insisting the United States had no such obligation.

In addition, Trump addressed the conflict involving Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. He said the fighting had continued for too long and resulted in excessive civilian casualties. He urged greater responsibility regarding military operations and criticized attacks that harmed residential areas. Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with a reported Israeli strike on Beirut before the agreement announcement.

The meeting highlighted broader efforts to strengthen regional stability following the US-Iran agreement. Separately, Trump said Washington and Tehran had signed a preliminary accord extending a ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, key details remain unclear, and negotiators are expected to address complex issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, during future talks.
