Heatwave intensifies across country; doctors urge precaution against heatstroke

Published on: June 15, 2026 2:05 AM

Health experts have warned that the ongoing severe heatwave across the country has pushed heatstroke cases to a critical level, urging the public to adopt strict preventive measures.

Consultant Child Specialist Dr Tahir Nadeem Khan said that cases of heat-related illnesses, including fever, weakness, and heat exhaustion among children, have significantly increased. He noted that a large number of patients are being brought to hospitals daily due to extreme temperatures.

He stressed that keeping the body well-hydrated is the most important preventive step, advising people to drink plenty of water, avoid direct sunlight, and refrain from unnecessary outdoor exposure. He also advised parents to ensure children remain in cool and shaded environments, particularly during school holidays when outdoor play activity increases.

Dr Khan further recommended increased intake of water, juices, and light foods, while avoiding unhealthy items such as chips and carbonated drinks. He also advised wearing light, loose but body-covering clothing to reduce direct exposure to sunlight.

Explaining emergency response, he said that in case of heatstroke, the patient should be immediately moved to a cool and shaded place, the body should be cooled using water or wet cloth, and hydration must be restored without delay. He added that in some cases, low blood sugar or dehydration may also lead to unconsciousness, requiring prompt first aid.

Separately, renowned physician Dr. Fida Ahmed said that preventive measures against heatstroke have become essential amid the current severe weather conditions, particularly the use of cold beverages, shaded places, and light clothing.

Speaking to APP, he said that labourers, athletes, and children are the most affected groups due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. He emphasized that maintaining hydration through ORS, lemon water, and other fluids is vital. In the absence of ORS, a simple home solution of sugar and salt mixed in water can also be used effectively.

Dr Ahmed advised labourers to take regular breaks every one to two hours during work and consume fluids to prevent dehydration. He added that symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, unconsciousness, and confusion should be taken seriously, and immediate cooling measures should be taken before shifting the patient to a hospital or ICU in severe cases.

Both doctors reiterated that timely precautions and awareness can significantly reduce the risks associated with heatstroke during the ongoing heatwave.
