Steam gamer creates collectible SSD cartridges for PC games

Published on: July 16, 2026 3:31 PM

As digital game libraries continue replacing discs and cartridges, a gamer has created a system that gives Steam PC games a physical form again. The project uses 128GB SATA SSDs placed inside 3D-printed cartridges, allowing each cartridge to store a single Steam game while offering the nostalgic feel of classic gaming media.

The gamer, known online as “Jibril-sama,” designed a special dock that connects directly to a PC and reads the inserted SSD cartridge. Custom software detects the drive and automatically launches the stored game, creating a simple plug-and-play experience similar to older gaming consoles.

Moreover, each cartridge includes custom artwork and a printed outer shell that resembles traditional video game cartridges. This design allows players to display their favorite games on shelves, collect them like classic releases, and still enjoy the convenience of digital PC gaming without changing how Steam itself works.

The creator said the idea started after buying inexpensive used SATA SSDs and looking for a creative way to reuse them. By turning the drives into dedicated game cartridges, the gamer built a personal Steam collection where every favorite title has its own physical version that can be stored, displayed, and played.

Meanwhile, the project appears at a time when physical game media continues to decline across the gaming industry. Console makers are increasingly promoting digital-only releases, while PC gamers have relied almost entirely on digital storefronts for years, making physical collections far less common than they were in previous gaming generations.

However, the system still has some limits because Steam games receive frequent updates and patches that must be installed manually on each SSD cartridge. For that reason, the creator sees the project as a nostalgic way to preserve and revisit favorite games rather than a full replacement for a standard digital Steam library.
