State funeral for Ayatollah Khamenei delayed until Muharram period

Published on: June 13, 2026 1:25 PM

Iranian authorities have postponed the state funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with the ceremony now expected to take place in late June or early July. Tehran Mayor Ali Reza Zakani confirmed the development, indicating that officials have revised the original schedule as preparations continue. The delay has shifted attention toward new arrangements being made for one of the country’s most significant national ceremonies.

According to the updated timeline, the final funeral rites are likely to be held during the second Ashra of Muharram, which falls between June 26 and July 5. Earlier reports had suggested that the burial would take place at the beginning of Muharram. However, authorities later decided to adjust the schedule as planning for the event entered a new phase.

The postponement has generated widespread public interest because of Ayatollah Khamenei’s prominent role in Iran’s political and religious landscape. Officials are now working to coordinate the ceremony during a period that aligns with both religious observances and state protocols. The revised schedule is expected to allow authorities additional time to organise large-scale arrangements.

Meanwhile, government institutions continue preparations for official events linked to the funeral, including logistical and administrative planning. Security considerations are also playing an important role in determining the final timetable. Authorities are reviewing multiple factors to ensure that the ceremonies proceed smoothly and accommodate the expected public participation.

Although officials have confirmed the delay, they have not yet announced a definitive burial date. Relevant departments remain engaged in consultations regarding the most suitable timing for the event. Further details are expected once planning committees complete their assessments and finalise arrangements for the ceremony.

The funeral is anticipated to draw significant attention from across Iran and beyond, reflecting the influence and legacy of the late leader. As preparations continue, authorities are expected to release additional information regarding attendance, scheduling and official commemorative events in the coming days.
