Opposition’s high hopes in Sindh hit by PPP-PML-N rapprochement

Published on: June 11, 2026 2:24 AM

The political optimism that had been building within Sindh’s opposition parties over the past several weeks has suffered a major setback following renewed understanding between the federal government and the Sindh administration.

Opposition leaders had been closely watching growing differences between Islamabad and Karachi and were hoping that the widening gap could trigger political realignments in the province. However, recent contacts between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) appear to have eased tensions, leaving opposition parties with far less political space than they had anticipated.

Sources familiar with the discussions said both sides have made progress on a range of issues, including fiscal challenges, the upcoming federal and provincial budgets, development spending and resource-sharing arrangements. The two parties have agreed to continue resolving disagreements through dialogue and consultation.

According to sources, the PPP and PML-N remain committed to working together on key parliamentary and economic matters, effectively dispelling speculation that their relationship was heading towards a breakdown.

The development has also weakened claims that some PPP legislators were exploring contacts with opposition groups. Sources said no significant political movement has emerged despite weeks of speculation in political circles.

Meanwhile, rumours regarding the future of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) have also been put to rest. Sources said there is currently no plan to transfer the programme to provincial governments, nor has any agreement been reached on a new administrative framework.

Although BISP featured in discussions between federal and Sindh authorities, both sides decided to continue consultations while maintaining the programme’s existing structure.

Political observers believe the latest thaw in federal-Sindh relations has abruptly interrupted the momentum opposition parties were hoping to build, forcing them to reassess their political calculations ahead of an important budget season.
