PPP leads Gilgit-Baltistan polls as independents gain ground

Published on: June 8, 2026 5:36 PM

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged as the leading political force in the Gilgit-Baltistan general elections, according to unofficial and unconfirmed results released from 19 of the 24 constituencies. The party has secured eight seats so far, placing it ahead of its rivals as vote counting continues across the region. The evolving results suggest a competitive electoral landscape with several closely contested races.

Meanwhile, independent candidates have delivered a strong performance by winning six constituencies, demonstrating significant voter support outside the traditional party structure. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has secured four seats, while Majlis-e-Wahdat Muslimeen (MWM) has won one constituency. With results from the remaining seats still pending, the final balance of power in the assembly remains undecided.

PPP recorded notable victories in several key constituencies, including Nagar, Skardu, Kharmang, Shigar and Gilgit. Among the party’s strongest performances, Imran Nadeem won GBA-12 Shigar with 12,179 votes, while Amjad Hussain secured GBA-1 Gilgit-I with 10,594 votes. These victories strengthened the party’s position and helped establish its lead in the ongoing count.

On the other hand, PML-N maintained its presence with important wins in Gilgit, Ghizer, Ganche and Diamer. Former Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister Hafeezur Rehman retained influence by winning GBA-2 Gilgit with 11,204 votes. In addition, MWM secured its first seat through Maisam Kazim in GBA-8 Skardu after a closely fought contest decided by a narrow margin.

Independent candidates also achieved impressive victories in constituencies such as Hunza, Gilgit, Diamer and Ghanche. Several races were decided by small vote differences, highlighting intense competition and strong local support for non-party candidates. Their performance could play a crucial role in shaping future political alliances once the complete results are announced.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the people of Gilgit-Baltistan on the peaceful conduct of the elections and praised their participation in the democratic process. He also acknowledged PPP’s strong showing, congratulated successful candidates from all parties and commended election officials, police and security agencies for ensuring a transparent and orderly electoral process.
