Naqvi heads to Tehran amid Iran talks

Published on: June 6, 2026 8:11 PM

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is set to visit Tehran today for high-level meetings with Iranian leaders amid ongoing Iran-US diplomatic contacts. The visit is significant because discussions on Iran’s frozen assets appear to have gained momentum in recent weeks. The engagements could affect regional diplomacy and efforts to resolve long-standing financial disputes involving Iran.

According to sources, Naqvi will discuss possible pathways toward a memorandum of understanding concerning Iranian frozen funds. Diplomatic activity surrounding the issue has intensified recently, raising hopes for progress. However, officials familiar with the matter said differences remain over the total amount of funds to be released. Disagreements also persist regarding the timeline for any future disbursements.

The visit comes as Tehran and Washington continue indirect diplomatic efforts on several key issues. Sources said negotiations related to Iran’s frozen assets have advanced in recent weeks. At the same time, unresolved questions continue to complicate a final agreement. Reports also suggest that the United States is seeking quicker progress toward a resolution.

According to sources, US President Donald Trump has informed mediators that negotiations cannot continue indefinitely. He reportedly urged stakeholders to pursue a settlement within a 60-day timeframe. Ahead of the visit, Naqvi met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review developments related to Iran-US talks. The prime minister also provided guidance regarding the interior minister’s upcoming engagements with the Iranian leadership.

During their meeting, the two leaders discussed regional developments and other issues of mutual concern. Naqvi also briefed the prime minister on Pakistan’s internal security situation and ongoing national security efforts. The Tehran visit follows a series of contacts with senior Iranian officials over recent days. Earlier, Naqvi confirmed a fresh round of talks with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, signaling continued diplomatic engagement between the neighboring countries.
