New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner has revealed that Mumbai Indians paid only half of his agreed Indian Premier League contract after he was ruled out due to a shoulder injury. He expressed disappointment over the reduced payment and said the situation became difficult during an already challenging recovery period.
Furthermore, Santner stated that his IPL contract was worth around INR 20 million, but he only received half of the agreed amount after his injury. He explained that the decision surprised him because the injury occurred while he was actively participating in the tournament.

According to Santner, his issues began after missing his first match following the birth of his second child, after which he returned to play against Delhi. He then suffered a shoulder injury during that match, returned briefly, but injured the same shoulder again within a short span.
As a result, Santner was ruled out of the IPL on April 27 after playing five matches for Mumbai Indians. He said the repeated injury forced him to return home, as he felt continuous strain on the same shoulder during the tournament.

However, Santner added that he initially expected an eight-week recovery period but regained full fitness within four weeks. Consequently, he returned to New Zealand’s national side ahead of the first Test against England, which also triggered discussion around his recovery timeline.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that IPL regulations usually allow injured players to receive payments based on their contracts, depending on circumstances. Mumbai Indians have not officially responded to Santner’s claims, while the franchise had already signed South African spinner Keshav Maharaj as his replacement.
