Lahore tops global pollution list as AQI reaches 210

Published on: June 3, 2026 7:14 PM

Lahore has once again ranked as the most polluted city in the world after its Air Quality Index rose to 210, placing the city firmly in the “very unhealthy” category. The persistent smog has created severe health concerns, especially as air quality conditions continue to worsen across urban areas in the region.

Moreover, health experts have issued urgent advisories for vulnerable groups including children, elderly citizens and patients suffering from respiratory diseases. Authorities have recommended that these groups remain indoors as prolonged exposure to polluted air may significantly increase the risk of breathing complications and other health issues.

The latest global pollution rankings show Delhi in second place with an AQI of 152, while Kolkata follows in third position at 137. These figures highlight a broader regional air quality crisis, as multiple South Asian cities continue to struggle with hazardous pollution levels affecting daily life.

In addition, other global cities such as Kinshasa, Shanghai and Hanoi also recorded elevated AQI levels of 124, 117 and 103 respectively. Although lower than Lahore’s readings, these figures still place them among the world’s most polluted urban centres, reflecting widespread environmental challenges.

Consequently, Lahore’s AQI crossing the 200 mark signals a serious public health warning as smog conditions intensify. Environmental experts stress that long-term exposure to such pollution can lead to chronic respiratory diseases, reduced lung function and increased hospital admissions across affected populations.

Meanwhile, citizens continue to experience reduced visibility and discomfort in daily outdoor activities as pollution levels remain persistently high. Experts emphasize the need for immediate mitigation measures, improved emission control and stronger environmental policies to address the ongoing air quality crisis.
