CDF Munir, Araghchi discuss regional peace efforts

Published on: May 23, 2026 3:32 PM

Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Saturday. The leaders discussed regional security and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation in West Asia. The meeting highlighted Pakistan’s growing mediation role between the United States and Iran during rising regional tensions.

Iran’s government said both leaders stressed long-term peace, stability, and security across the region. The discussions focused on reducing tensions through dialogue and diplomatic engagement. Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday during Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to facilitate communication between Washington and Tehran. The Inter-Services Public Relations said Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni received the Pakistani delegation.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also attended the reception in Tehran. Meanwhile, Naqvi separately met Araghchi to discuss proposals addressing outstanding disputes between Iran and the United States. The visit followed the postponement of a planned second round of talks in Islamabad. Consequently, Pakistan increased diplomatic engagement with both countries to revive negotiations.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s mediation efforts during remarks in Sweden. Rubio said Washington remained in constant communication with Field Marshal Munir regarding regional diplomacy. He praised Pakistan for playing an “admirable” role in easing tensions between Tehran and Washington. The comments reflected growing international recognition of Islamabad’s diplomatic involvement.

Additionally, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported continued consultations between Pakistani and Iranian officials on regional peace initiatives. Pakistan recently intensified efforts to support dialogue and prevent further instability in West Asia. Analysts believe sustained diplomatic engagement could reduce tensions and create opportunities for future negotiations. However, significant challenges remain as regional disputes continue affecting security and political relations.
