Shakira wins major court battle after years of legal pressure

Published on: May 18, 2026 7:44 PM

Shakira secured a major legal victory in Spain after the country’s High Court cleared her in a long-running tax fraud case linked to the 2011 tax year. The ruling ended an eight-year legal dispute and ordered Spanish authorities to return more than 60 million euros, including accumulated interest. The decision marks a significant moment for the internationally famous singer after years of courtroom battles and intense media attention.

The case began after Spanish tax officials argued that Shakira should have been considered a tax resident in Spain because of her relationship with former football star Gerard Piqué. Authorities claimed the singer spent enough time in the country during 2011 to fall under Spanish tax laws and become liable for local taxation. However, the court later concluded officials failed to provide sufficient evidence supporting that claim.

Under Spanish law, a person must remain in the country for more than 183 days within a calendar year to qualify as a tax resident. Court documents revealed that authorities were only able to confirm Shakira’s presence in Spain for 163 days during 2011, falling short of the legal requirement. Judges ultimately ruled that the evidence presented by tax investigators did not justify the accusations against the singer.

Meanwhile, Shakira’s legal team described the lengthy case as emotionally exhausting and damaging for both her personal life and public image. Her lawyer, Jose Luis Prada, said the singer experienced years of pressure while facing constant media scrutiny and legal uncertainty surrounding the allegations. During recent comments, Shakira also stated that the legal dispute caused severe emotional strain and negatively affected her family and overall wellbeing.

The singer’s relationship with Gerard Piqué remained central to the investigation because the couple began dating after meeting during the filming of the Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) music video in 2010. They later shared two sons together before publicly announcing their separation in 2022. Spanish authorities argued that her personal ties to the country strengthened the case for tax residency during the disputed period.

Although the ruling strongly favors Shakira, legal experts note that Spanish prosecutors still have the option to challenge the decision before Spain’s Supreme Court. For now, however, the judgment represents a major victory for the singer after years of legal and public pressure surrounding the high-profile case. Supporters across social media also welcomed the ruling, describing it as an important moment of relief for the global music star.
