Israeli strike in south Lebanon kills seven amid tensions

Published on: May 10, 2026 1:52 PM

An Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Saksakiyeh killed at least seven people, including a child, and injured fifteen others, according to Lebanon’s health ministry on Saturday. The attack further intensified tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border, where clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have continued despite an earlier ceasefire agreement. Moreover, the latest violence raised renewed concerns about civilian safety and the possibility of wider regional escalation.

The Israeli military stated that it targeted Hezbollah members in the town, claiming they were planning attacks against Israeli soldiers operating near the border area. Israeli officials acknowledged reports of civilian casualties and said the military had started reviewing details surrounding the incident to determine the circumstances of the strike. However, the attack immediately drew attention because several civilians were reportedly inside the targeted structure at the time of the bombing.

Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has continued in southern Lebanon despite a United States-brokered ceasefire announced on April 16 to reduce hostilities between both sides. Israel has maintained what it describes as a security zone inside southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has continued launching attacks and exchanging fire with Israeli forces. Consequently, repeated confrontations have kept border communities under constant fear of further military escalation and civilian casualties.

Earlier this week, Israel also announced that it had killed a commander from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force during an airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs. The strike marked Israel’s first major attack on the Lebanese capital’s southern districts since the ceasefire agreement came into effect last month. In addition, the operation signaled growing tensions despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing the conflict from expanding further across the region.

Meanwhile, the United States has continued diplomatic engagement by hosting two rounds of talks involving Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors in Washington during recent weeks. The discussions represented the highest-level direct contacts between Lebanese and Israeli government representatives in decades, reflecting growing international concern over instability along the border. Furthermore, Washington has repeatedly urged both sides to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could undermine ceasefire efforts.

Analysts believe the continued violence demonstrates the fragile nature of the current ceasefire and highlights the difficulties facing international mediation efforts in the region. Civilians living in southern Lebanon remain among the most affected as repeated strikes, cross-border fire and military operations continue disrupting daily life and security. Therefore, pressure is increasing on regional and international powers to push both sides toward a more lasting and stable agreement.
