Pakistan has announced a sharp increase in petroleum prices, pushing both petrol and high-speed diesel above Rs400 per litre for the first time, triggering concerns over inflation and rising transport costs across the country.
According to an official notification issued by the government, petrol prices were increased by Rs14.92 per litre, while diesel saw an increase of Rs15 per litre. After the revision, petrol is now priced at Rs414.58 per litre and diesel at Rs414.78 per litre, effective from midnight.

The latest adjustment comes amid continued fluctuations in global oil markets and ongoing economic pressures faced by the country. Authorities have not provided detailed justification in the notification, but fuel price revisions are typically linked to changes in international crude oil prices and exchange rate movements.
Petrol is widely used in motorcycles, cars, and rickshaws, while diesel powers heavy transport vehicles, buses, and agricultural machinery. As a result, the price hike is expected to have a broad impact across multiple sectors of the economy.
Transporters and logistics operators are likely to face increased operational costs, which could eventually be passed on to consumers. Analysts warn that higher fuel prices may contribute to inflationary pressure, particularly in food and essential commodities due to rising freight charges.
Public transport fares in several cities are also expected to increase in response to the new fuel rates. Households already struggling with inflation are likely to feel additional financial strain as daily commuting and goods prices rise further.

Economists say fuel price volatility continues to remain one of the key drivers of inflation in Pakistan, affecting both urban and rural populations. They stress that sustained increases in energy costs can slow down economic activity and reduce purchasing power.
The latest price hike has once again sparked public concern, with citizens calling for greater stability in fuel pricing and relief measures to offset the impact of rising living costs.
