OpenAI has introduced a new feature called “Codex Pets” in its Codex coding tool, adding AI-powered animated companions designed to enhance user experience during development tasks. The update reflects the growing trend of AI “companions” that assist users in a more interactive and visual way.
The company said these AI pets are lightweight animated assistants that stay active within coding projects. They provide real-time updates on project status, allowing users to monitor ongoing tasks without switching between tabs. This is intended to make workflow management smoother and more engaging.

Users can track active threads, view ongoing coding processes, and stay updated on tasks that are ready for review. The feature is designed to reduce interruptions and improve productivity by keeping key information visible within the workspace.
To enable the feature, users can go to Codex settings, select “Appearance,” and activate the “Pets” option. Once enabled, the AI companions can be turned on or off at any time according to user preference.
