Iran’s leadership has sharpened its response to escalating tensions with the United States, urging Washington to change course while also taking a swipe at the economic fallout of the crisis. Iranian President Masoud Peshkeshian said the United States must abandon its hardline policies if it wants to reach a meaningful agreement. “If the American government abandons its totalitarianism and respects the rights of the Iranian nation, ways to reach an agreement will certainly be found,” he stated. His remarks signal Tehran’s openness to dialogue, while firmly placing responsibility on the US to change its stance. The Iranian president also acknowledged the efforts of his country’s diplomatic team involved in recent talks. He specifically praised Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, referring to him warmly and offering prayers for his success. “I commend the members of the negotiating team, especially my dear brother Dr. Qalibaf, and say ‘God gives you strength,'” Peshkeshian added. Meanwhile, Qalibaf took a direct jab at US President Donald Trump following Washington’s announcement of a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. In a sarcastic social media post, he shared locations of petrol stations near the White House and urged Americans to “take advantage of the current oil prices.”
