NEW YORK: The United Nations (UN) Security Council has adopted a resolution calling on Iran to immediately stop attacks against Gulf countries, amid growing regional tensions and security concerns.
The resolution, drafted on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), received a record 135 co-sponsors, surpassing the previous high of 134 for Resolution 2177 adopted in 2014 during the Ebola crisis. It was passed with 13 votes in favour, while China and Russia abstained.

The text strongly condemns attacks allegedly carried out by Iran against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, describing them as a breach of international law and a serious threat to global peace and security.

It also emphasises the right of individual and collective self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. The resolution highlights concerns over the alleged targeting of civilians, critical infrastructure and commercial vessels, particularly in and around the Strait of Hormuz, warning that such actions threaten maritime security, international trade and global energy supplies.
Pakistan voted in favour of the resolution and joined other co-sponsors supporting the measure. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, said escalating attacks had pushed the region toward conflict and posed serious risks to international peace.
Separately, the United States vetoed a ceasefire resolution introduced by Russia that called for halting hostilities involving Iran, the US and Israel.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar also reiterated Pakistan’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and called on Israel to withdraw its forces from occupied Lebanese territories, while urging an end to attacks on civilians and infrastructure.
