Saudi Arabia criticises Iran over regional attacks

Saudis tell US that Iran may attack the kingdom: Officials

Saudi Arabia on Monday criticised Iran over what it described as continued attacks targeting the Kingdom and other Gulf states, warning that Tehran’s actions could further escalate tensions in the region.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia said Iran’s behaviour did not reflect wisdom or a genuine intention to avoid broader regional conflict. The ministry warned that the ongoing attacks represent a dangerous escalation that could have serious consequences for current and future relations.

The statement also rejected remarks made by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who had earlier claimed that Tehran had no intention of targeting neighbouring countries.

According to Riyadh, Iran has failed to match its words with actions on the ground. “The Iranian side has not implemented that declaration on the ground, either during the president’s speech or afterward, and has continued its attacks based on baseless justifications that have no basis in fact,” the ministry said.

Saudi Arabia also denied claims that fighter jets and aerial refuelling aircraft operating from Saudi territory were participating in the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

Officials clarified that the aircraft are conducting defensive patrols to monitor and safeguard the airspace of Gulf nations, including members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, from potential missile and drone attacks.

The Saudi foreign ministry further condemned attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, including airports and oil facilities, describing them as a threat to regional stability and security.

It added that such actions constitute clear violations of international law and established conventions governing armed conflict. Saudi Arabia reiterated its strong condemnation of the Iranian attacks against the Kingdom, GCC member states and several Arab and allied countries, stressing the need to protect regional security and stability.
