A written request was sent from the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Islamabad, to the Chief Commissioner’s office. The letter, signed by the Deputy Inspector General (Headquarters), requested the secondment of two army majors and 16 Special Services Group (SSG) commandos to provide training for the capital’s SWAT personnel. Of the 16 SSG-trained officers, 10 are expected to be attached to the National Police Academy (NPA), Islamabad, to train assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) in advanced tactical operations.

The letter highlighted the multifaceted responsibilities of the Islamabad police, including maintaining law and order, crime prevention, security provision, and route protection. It also called for urgent attention to the matter.

A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the request had been forwarded by the Chief Commissioner’s office to the Interior Ministry, which would coordinate with army authorities.

The SWAT force, established with over 200 personnel, is expected to operate under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police, Counter Terrorism Department. Training for the new force began about a month ago at Police Lines Headquarters, with an army team currently providing instruction. The formal requisition of the two majors and six SSG commandos will officially embed army support into the training program.

Officials said the remaining SSG personnel will focus on training ASPs at the NPA, enhancing their tactical and counter-terrorism skills. This collaboration is seen as a key step in bolstering the operational readiness of Islamabad’s SWAT force.
