Trump withdraws invitation for Canada to Board of Peace

Trump's Board of Peace Is Withdrawing Invite to Canada's Carney - Bloomberg

US President Donald Trump on Thursday revoked an invitation for Canada to join his newly launched Board of Peace initiative, following Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Carney, in his address, criticised the use of economic integration and tariffs by powerful nations as tools of leverage, urging the world to accept the end of a rules-based global order. His speech, which received a rare standing ovation, highlighted how “middle powers” like Canada could cooperate to avoid being sidelined by American hegemony.

In response, Trump posted on Truth Social that the Board of Peace was withdrawing Canada’s invitation, describing the board as “the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled.” Last week, Carney’s office had confirmed that he had been invited and intended to accept.

Trump also addressed Carney directly in Davos, asserting that “Canada lives because of the United States” and that Carney should be grateful for past US support. The move comes hours after Trump officially launched the board, which is intended to support a Gaza ceasefire and other global conflict resolutions.

According to Trump, permanent members of the board are required to contribute $1 billion each, granting them significant influence over its operations. He added that the board would work “in conjunction with the United Nations,” with UN engagement limited to the context of the Gaza peace plan, as confirmed by UN spokesperson Rolando Gomez.

Other countries confirmed as members include Argentina, Bahrain, Morocco, Pakistan, and Turkiye. Some US allies, including Britain, France, and Italy, have declined to join at this time. Trump’s decision to withdraw Canada underscores ongoing tensions over the board’s composition and the broader geopolitics surrounding his peace initiative.
