The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a new facial recognition-based biometric verification facility, marking a significant step toward expanding digital identity services in Pakistan.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the definition of biometric verification has been broadened through amendments to the National Identity Card laws. Under the updated framework, citizens can now verify their identity using facial recognition technology through the Pak ID Mobile App, offering an alternative to fingerprint-based verification.

NADRA officials said that from January 20, NADRA registration centres across the country will begin issuing biometric verification certificates based on facial recognition. Citizens will be able to obtain these certificates whenever required by paying a nominal fee.

The spokesperson explained that in cases where fingerprint verification cannot be completed due to technical or physical reasons, applicants will be guided to the nearest NADRA registration centre for facial recognition. Once the process is successfully completed, the biometric verification certificate will be issued accordingly.
The newly introduced certificate will carry key identification details, including the holder’s photograph, CNIC number, name, father’s name, a unique tracking ID, and a QR code. NADRA has also urged relevant government departments and private institutions to take necessary steps to ensure the smooth implementation and acceptance of this facility.
Officials noted that following the launch of Pakistan’s Digital ID initiative, this facial recognition-based service will also be fully accessible through the Pak ID Mobile App, further strengthening remote access to identity verification services.

Separately, NADRA highlighted growing public reliance on digital platforms, revealing that more than six million citizens obtained their identity documents through the Pak-ID mobile application during 2025. The authority expressed appreciation for public trust in the app, stating that it has significantly improved access to identity-related services and enhanced convenience nationwide.
NADRA said the rising use of the Pak-ID app reflects its role in streamlining registration processes and supporting Pakistan’s broader push toward the digitalisation of public services.
