New York enters new era as Mamdani takes office

Published on: December 29, 2025 1:39 PM

NEW YORK: As the new year begins, New York City is set to welcome a new mayor, with mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani taking office on Thursday and making history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, according to AFP.

Mamdani will be sworn in just after midnight on New Year’s Eve by New York Attorney General Letitia James, marking the start of a four-year term amid high expectations and sharp political contrasts. A larger public ceremony will follow at midday outside City Hall, presided over by US Senator Bernie Sanders, a prominent figure of the American left.

The 34-year-old Democratic Socialist campaigned on tackling the soaring cost of living in a city of 8.5 million people. Central to his agenda is a proposal to freeze rent on more than one million regulated apartments, although questions remain over whether the city’s rent board — largely appointed by outgoing mayor Eric Adams — will support the move.

Other pledges include building 200,000 affordable housing units, expanding access to childcare, launching publicly owned supermarkets and introducing free bus services. While detailed plans have yet to be released, Mamdani is seen as benefiting from a strong working relationship with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, whose approval will be key for proposed tax measures.

Mamdani’s tenure will also unfold against a complex national backdrop. Despite ideological differences, a recent meeting between Mamdani and President Donald Trump was described as cordial. However, rising federal immigration enforcement activity in New York could become a source of tension.

With limited governing experience — having previously served one term in the State Assembly — Mamdani is assembling a team of seasoned advisers from past city administrations and the federal government. He has also sought to reassure business leaders and New York’s Jewish community of his commitment to inclusive governance.

Observers say Mamdani’s leadership will be closely watched, with voters expecting swift progress beyond symbolism as the city enters a new political chapter.
