The federal government is planning to launch a two-year development plan for Islamabad, titled Vision 2027, aimed at transforming the capital through a series of infrastructure and civic improvement projects. The announcement came as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Allama Iqbal flyover at T-Chowk on Thursday.

The prime minister opened the flyover 96 days after laying its foundation stone, with the project completed ahead of its scheduled timeline. Built at a cost of Rs1.4 billion, the project saw a 15 per cent increase due to changes in its scope of work.

The 1.1-kilometre-long flyover has been constructed at the junction of GT Road and Islamabad Expressway to improve traffic flow. With its completion, the expressway has become signal-free from Faisal Mosque up to GT Road, easing congestion for commuters.

Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Sharif praised Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, the CDA chairman and contractors for ensuring timely completion and maintaining quality standards. He also commended officials involved in recent anti-encroachment operations across the capital.

The prime minister said unchecked encroachments had long posed challenges to urban planning and stressed the need for sustained action. He highlighted recent road development initiatives, describing them as beneficial for residents and transporters.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the focus of ongoing projects was cost-effectiveness, quality and timely execution. He announced the construction of service roads along Islamabad Expressway to manage light traffic and said rehabilitation of existing service roads was also planned.

The interior minister further revealed that another major project, the Shaheen Chowk underpass, was nearing completion. He added that Vision 2027 would include a wide range of development schemes, though detailed plans would be shared later.

He also announced steps to address Islamabad’s water shortage, acknowledging the growing gap between supply and demand. Officials said a task force was already working on long-term solutions to the city’s water crisis.
