Maryam, Bilawal exchange warm messages after flood spat

Published on: December 12, 2025 10:15 PM

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari expressed gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for her warm welcome during his recent visit to Punjab, calling it a “positive gesture.”

Maryam had tweeted, “I extend a warm welcome to @BBhuttoZardari on his visit to Punjab. Punjab is your home, and you will always find a place of respect here,” highlighting a conciliatory tone.

Responding, Bilawal wrote, “Thank you, Madam Chief Minister, for the warm welcome and positive gesture,” while Maryam added, “You have my heartfelt good wishes and prayers,” signaling improved political rapport.

The exchange comes months after tensions arose over flood relief efforts, when Maryam stated Punjab would manage aid independently, emphasizing that her government did not request external assistance to protect the province’s self-respect.

Earlier, Bilawal had criticised delays in appealing for international flood assistance, citing standard international practices and previous disasters in 2005, 2010, and past floods during his tenure as foreign minister.

The earlier verbal clash over flood compensation via the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) eventually eased after a PML-N delegation met President Asif Ali Zardari in Nawabshah to mediate and restore political decorum.
