India suffered a heavy defeat in the opening Test in Kolkata and now need to bat for over three sessions to avoid another loss in Guwahati. The current chase of 549 runs would be the highest in Test cricket, surpassing the West Indies’ 418 against Australia in 2003. India’s highest successful chase is 406 against the West Indies in 1976.

Stubbs was the last wicket to fall, bowled by Ravindra Jadeja (4-62), after a resilient 101-run partnership with Tony de Zorzi, who made 49. Stubbs’ innings of 180 balls featured nine boundaries and a six, frustrating the Indian bowlers and allowing South Africa to build a commanding lead.

South Africa resumed on 26-0 after bundling out India for 201 in the first innings to lead by 288. They chose not to enforce the follow-on, instead batting again to further pressure the hosts. Opener Ryan Rickelton contributed 35 before falling to Jadeja while attempting an aggressive shot, and Aiden Markram added 29 before being dismissed by the same spinner. Skipper Temba Bavuma managed only three runs before falling to Washington Sundar.
