Islamabad rolls out mandatory vehicle E-tag system

Published on: November 16, 2025 2:01 PM

Islamabad’s administration has announced that the city will begin issuing mandatory E-Tag stickers for all vehicles starting 18 November, aiming to strengthen road security and enhance monitoring across the capital. Officials said vehicle owners can collect the stickers from designated points that will be announced ahead of the rollout, ensuring a smooth and organized process for the public.

To obtain the E-Tag, vehicle owners must present their vehicle registration card, and the system will apply to all vehicles regardless of their provincial registration. Authorities stressed that stickers will only be issued at approved issuance sites to maintain strict verification. Moreover, the administration expects large turnout in the first week as thousands seek compliance with the new requirement.

The initiative follows earlier statements from the Minister of State for Interior, who emphasized that no vehicle will be allowed to enter or operate within Islamabad without electronic tagging. He noted that the updated system will help authorities track vehicle movement more effectively, thereby supporting broader security goals. Additionally, officials anticipate that digital monitoring will improve coordination among various law-enforcement agencies.

The decision comes in the aftermath of a recent suicide attack outside the district and sessions court in G-11, which resulted in multiple casualties and raised urgent concerns over security gaps. In response, the government accelerated efforts to introduce stronger surveillance tools capable of identifying threats before they escalate. Consequently, the E-Tag system is being prioritized as a key element in the city’s security upgrades.

Authorities believe the new tagging requirement will significantly improve safety in high-risk zones and boost overall public protection across Islamabad. They also expect the measure to streamline vehicle checks and reduce manual inspections, ultimately making road movement faster and more secure. As the program begins, residents are encouraged to obtain their tags promptly to avoid penalties and ensure uninterrupted mobility.
