President Zardari approves bills resetting military chiefs’ tenures

ISLAMABAD – President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday gave his formal assent to three key bills, including one that resets the tenure of Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir following his appointment as the chief of the defence forces (CDF).

The president approved the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Pakistan Air Force (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Pakistan Navy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

These amendments ensure that the tenure of the respective chiefs of Pakistan’s armed forces aligns with the recent changes in appointments and command structures.

With President Zardari’s assent, the bills have now been incorporated into the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, granting them full legal effect.

Officials noted that the move is part of ongoing efforts to formalize leadership transitions in the country’s defence forces while maintaining constitutional compliance.
