Hyderabad traffic fines hiked; new e-challan rules explained

Published on: November 8, 2025 11:12 AM

Hyderabad traffic fines substantially increased; E-Challan system coming soon
HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Traffic Police have significantly increased traffic fines, aligning them with Karachi’s penalties, adding financial pressure on motorists. Vehicles without number plates will now face a steep Rs 20,000 fine, while driving without a license will cost Rs 2,500. Not wearing a helmet will attract a Rs 500 penalty, wrong parking Rs 2,000, and violating one-way rules Rs 3,000. Vehicles lacking indicators will be fined Rs 1,000.

Initially, the police will issue simple challans, followed by e-challans once the system is fully operational. The provincial traffic department has given Hyderabad Traffic Police a one-week deadline to implement the revised fines. To raise awareness, banners and a citywide publicity campaign have been launched.

The revised rules also clarify the process for motorists who continue to receive e-challans after selling their vehicles. According to DSP Kashif Nadeem of Karachi Traffic Police, sellers must visit the nearest Traffic Police Sahulat Centre to report the sale. The vehicle is temporarily placed under “inquiry mode” for 8–10 days while verification is carried out at the Excise and Taxation Department with proof of sale, buyer CNIC, and registration documents.

Failure to transfer ownership within 30 days of purchase can result in escalating fines, vehicle blacklisting, or confiscation, with penalties sometimes exceeding the vehicle’s value. Authorities stressed that timely transfer of ownership is both a legal and ethical responsibility to avoid financial and administrative complications.

Motorists are urged to comply with the new penalties and ownership transfer rules to prevent legal trouble and additional costs.
