Punjab approves EV charging stations in cities

Published on: September 25, 2025 10:31 PM

The Punjab government has officially allowed the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in all declared commercial areas, marking a major step toward modernizing the province’s urban infrastructure and energy landscape. This decision reflects the growing demand for sustainable transport facilities as more people and businesses shift toward eco-friendly vehicles. By providing legal space for charging points, the government aims to encourage investment in clean technology and support the adoption of electric mobility across Punjab.

In addition to approving EV charging stations, the Punjab government has also given permission for the establishment of new petrol pumps in commercial areas without requiring prior clearance from the District Design Committee. This move is intended to simplify procedures for investors and businesses while ensuring the availability of fueling facilities for both conventional and electric vehicles. By lifting unnecessary administrative hurdles, the government expects to accelerate the development of energy-related infrastructure.

Furthermore, the provincial government has lifted its earlier restrictions on installing petrol pumps, offering businesses greater flexibility under the newly amended rules. The Local Government Department has already issued revised guidelines that clearly define procedures for the installation of such facilities. These reforms are designed to address growing demand, streamline processes, and prevent delays in meeting the fueling needs of Punjab’s expanding urban population.

Officials have explained that the introduction of charging stations alongside petrol pumps will create a balanced energy ecosystem that serves both traditional fuel users and emerging EV owners. This approach not only reduces gaps in service delivery but also aligns with the broader national strategy of promoting sustainable transport. The policy ensures that both infrastructures can coexist to provide maximum convenience for consumers.

Moreover, the Punjab government’s decision is expected to attract private investment into the energy and transport sectors, generating employment opportunities while boosting the economy. Investors will now have greater clarity and confidence to set up operations, knowing that government regulations are business-friendly. As demand for EVs grows, the presence of charging infrastructure will help overcome range anxiety, making electric vehicles a more practical choice for the public.

Ultimately, these policy reforms signal Punjab’s readiness to embrace a future where energy efficiency, environmental protection, and economic growth move hand in hand. By easing rules and providing space for innovation, the provincial government is positioning Punjab as a leader in sustainable transport development.
