Macron urges unity, warns against global selfishness

Published on: September 24, 2025 3:43 PM

French President Emmanuel Macron warned world leaders on Tuesday against letting a “survival of the fittest” mindset dominate global politics, stressing the urgent need to revive cooperation and shared responsibility. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, he said the world faces growing divisions that threaten peace and stability, urging countries to reject selfishness and short-term gains in favor of collective progress.

Macron defended the existing international order, responding to criticism of the UN and its institutions. Without naming names, he suggested that those most vocal in their attacks on the UN are often the same powers seeking to rewrite global rules for their own benefit. He emphasized that the world’s complexity should not deter nations from upholding principles and ambitions that protect fairness and mutual respect in international relations.

He reminded the Assembly that the spirit of cooperation forged 80 years ago, at the founding of the UN, must guide today’s leaders through crises ranging from armed conflicts to climate change. Macron warned that abandoning shared values would create a world where only the strongest survive, eroding decades of progress in diplomacy, security, and humanitarian efforts. Restoring trust among nations, he said, is essential to managing an increasingly interconnected world.

Macron also defended France’s diplomatic moves, including his recognition of a Palestinian state, which he announced Monday from the same podium. He argued that rejecting double standards is critical to achieving lasting peace, adding that France will remain committed to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression while working toward stability in the Middle East. His remarks underscored France’s role as a bridge between competing global powers.

In a notable moment, Macron praised U.S. President Donald Trump for his apparent shift on Ukraine, acknowledging Trump’s statement that Kyiv could not only reclaim its occupied territories but possibly achieve even greater success. Macron welcomed the change as a positive step toward unified Western support for Ukraine, while cautioning that global challenges require consistent cooperation beyond individual conflicts.

The French president’s speech served as a rallying call for multilateralism at a time of heightened global tensions. By urging dialogue, fairness, and mutual respect, Macron sought to reaffirm the UN’s relevance and inspire world leaders to work together to solve shared problems rather than pursue narrow national interests.
