MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) clarified its stance on playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup. The explanation came after questions arose regarding India’s participation in the tournament. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said the board follows the central government’s policy in such matters.
He added that India’s current policy does not restrict the national team from participating in any international or multi-nation tournaments. “The government has not imposed a ban on playing against countries with which India does not have friendly ties,” Saikia said.
Saikia emphasized that India must play all matches in multi-nation tournaments like the Asia Cup. Similarly, India is required to compete in ICC events even against countries with strained relations. The policy only restricts bilateral series against hostile nations.
He further explained that the BCCI strictly follows the government and sports department guidelines. Any refusal to play in multi-nation tournaments could result in penalties. Saikia gave the example that a ban on athletics could prevent athletes like Neeraj Chopra from participating internationally.
The BCCI stressed that the policy ensures fair play and prevents harm to players’ careers. Saikia said India’s participation in the Asia Cup is fully aligned with the government’s rules. Fans can expect India to compete against Pakistan and other nations in the tournament.
