Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has failed to come up with a clear and unified strategy for its planned nationwide protest on August 5, despite issuing instructions to hold demonstrations across all constituencies in Punjab. This date marks the second anniversary of party founder Imran Khan’s arrest, and PTI had earlier announced plans to stage countrywide protests in response.
While the party’s leadership directed workers in Punjab to hold protests within their respective constituencies, insiders revealed internal disagreements over the protest format. Punjab’s chief organiser Alia Hamza reportedly supports constituency-level rallies, believing this strategy will help avoid mass arrests and legal action against party members. Several other leaders also agree this localized approach is safer under the current political climate.
In Lahore, however, confusion continues as PTI leaders fail to reach a consensus on where and how to stage protests. Some senior members have suggested organizing a large joint rally in the city, but others remain cautious. Due to these conflicting views, no final decision has been made on the location or form of the protest in Lahore yet.
A few days ago, key PTI leaders, including the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, travelled from Islamabad to Lahore in what was described as a symbolic march. Following their arrival, the leadership also discussed delaying the protest for 90 days to focus on internal party strengthening and public support-building. However, that idea was eventually shelved.
In response to the ongoing confusion, Alia Hamza later made a social media post, announcing that protests would definitely go ahead in Punjab. Her post was seen as a clear move to settle the debate and mobilize grassroots workers. Nevertheless, the lack of unity and planning within PTI continues to raise concerns about the effectiveness and turnout of their upcoming protest efforts.
