Lahore: In a major development, the Punjab government has decided to build the Yellow Line underground along Lahore’s Canal Road. The project will follow a “cut-and-cover” method, ensuring no trees are removed and no green spaces are disturbed during construction.
The Yellow Line will run from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura. Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and NESPAK have started working on the design and cost estimates. The model will be similar to the Orange Line’s Mall Road underground station, using the same technique to install a trackless tram system.
The new underground tram will use 12 to 14 feet of road space on both sides of Canal Road. A signal-free route will be constructed beneath the road, after which surface traffic will be restored. Officials aim to ensure smooth public transport without disrupting the natural surroundings.
According to the LDA chief engineer, the previously estimated cost for an above-ground Yellow Line was around Rs80 billion. However, the revised cost for the underground plan is currently being evaluated and is expected to be finalized soon.
This project is part of a broader plan to modernize Lahore’s transport while preserving the city’s green landscape. Authorities believe the underground Yellow Line will ease traffic and improve mobility without harming the environment.
