“I want my daughters-in-law to work,” says Asma Abbas

Published on: July 23, 2025 2:08 PM

Veteran actress Asma Abbas recently shared her progressive views on women’s roles during a special segment on Good Morning Pakistan. She appeared alongside her youngest daughter-in-law, Sameen Ahmed, in a heartfelt conversation about family and career balance. Asma emphasized the importance of women using their education to its fullest potential, encouraging her daughters-in-law to work rather than stay idle at home.

She candidly stated, “I encourage my daughters-in-law to work because they’ve earned their degrees, and those shouldn’t go to waste.” She also highlighted that her other daughters-in-law work as well, stressing that women don’t need to be confined to household chores since they have house help. Asma’s open-minded stance challenges the common societal expectation that women pause their careers after marriage.

Sameen praised the warm and supportive environment of her new family. She recalled her first day when, instead of being scolded for waking up late, she was met with kindness and humor. Asma added with a smile that she loves seeing women dress up and head to work, and jokingly noted that she doesn’t mind Sameen’s habit of waking up late.

The segment sparked mixed reactions online. Many viewers praised Asma for her modern and empowering perspective on women’s careers, calling her mindset rare and admirable in Pakistani society. However, some criticized her, saying the choice to work or not should be personal and that a mother-in-law shouldn’t dictate such decisions.

Overall, Asma Abbas’s comments sparked an important conversation about women’s empowerment and family dynamics, encouraging a more supportive approach to women’s education and careers in Pakistan.
