MUMBAI – The man accused of stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has filed a bail plea, claiming the charges against him are false and that the FIR is based on a fictional account. He maintains that he had no involvement in the January attack.
Mohammad Shariful Islam, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, was arrested two days after the incident and is currently held at Arthur Road Jail. In his plea, he said the investigation is nearly complete, and only the formal chargesheet is yet to be filed by police.
The accused strongly denied any wrongdoing and stated he has no previous criminal record. He also argued that the crucial evidence, including CCTV footage and mobile call logs, has already been secured by authorities, reducing any chance of evidence tampering.
Moreover, Islam’s plea claimed that he poses no threat to witnesses and urged the court to consider these points while deciding on his release. He added that there was no legal justification for his arrest under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The plea highlighted that under Section 47 of BNSS, the accused must be told the reason for arrest and informed about the right to seek bail. Islam said this requirement was ignored at the time of his detention.
The court has now postponed the matter to July 21, awaiting the prosecution’s response. Meanwhile, actor Saif Ali Khan continues to recover after undergoing emergency surgery following the brutal stabbing in his Bandra apartment.
