Heavy overnight rains in Rawalpindi and Islamabad have caused widespread flooding, turning streets into rivers and prompting emergency evacuations. More than 250mm of rainfall has been recorded so far, submerging low-lying areas, blocking roads, and flooding homes. Authorities have declared a rain emergency in parts of Punjab, including Rawalpindi, and suspended local activities for safety.

The rising water level in Nullah Lai has triggered alarm sirens in surrounding areas. Water reached 20 feet at Katarian and 19 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge, posing serious flood risks. Residents have been asked to evacuate immediately. Rescue services, WASA, Civil Defence, and other agencies are on high alert. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered all institutions to inform the public through loudspeakers and emergency alerts.

In several parts of Rawalpindi, including Dhoke Khaba and Police Foundation, rainwater has entered homes. A bridge connecting Rawalpindi to Shahpur was submerged. In Chakri Road’s Ladian village, a family stranded on a rooftop with children was rescued using a helicopter. In Jhelum and Neelum Valley of Azad Kashmir, streams have overflowed due to continuous rain, increasing the risk of flash floods.
To manage the worsening situation, the district administration has requested military assistance. The Managing Director of WASA contacted the 111 Brigade, and arrangements have been made to deploy the army if needed. Citizens have been strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors.
Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rainfall in the coming hours across northern Punjab and Kashmir. Officials continue to urge people to follow safety instructions and cooperate with rescue teams to avoid life-threatening situations.
