The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a significant flood warning for River Jhelum at Mangla, forecasting a sharp rise in water flow between 350,000 to 450,000 cusecs over the next 24 hours. This surge is expected to cause serious flooding in upstream areas, threatening communities along the riverbanks.
The alert also warns that several nullahs connected to the Jhelum River may reach high flood levels, increasing the risk of localized flash floods. Muhammad Aleem ul Hassan, PMD’s Chief Meteorologist, urged all concerned authorities and local administrations to remain on high alert. He emphasized the need for immediate precautionary measures to avoid any loss of life or property.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flash flood alert for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan provinces. The warning follows changing hydro-meteorological patterns in the river’s upper catchment areas, raising concerns about further flooding downstream. The alert has been circulated to major government departments, including the Ministries of Defence and Climate Change, as well as provincial disaster management agencies.
Residents living near vulnerable flood-prone zones have been urged to stay informed through official channels. Authorities have advised preparedness for possible evacuations and strict adherence to safety instructions to minimize risks from sudden water surges and landslides.
This flood warning comes amid the ongoing monsoon season, which has brought heavy rainfall across Pakistan. Officials continue close monitoring and coordination to manage the situation effectively, aiming to protect lives, infrastructure, and farmland from the growing threat of floods.
