SIALKOT – The River Chenab has entered a low-flood level at Head Marala following a recent spell of heavy rainfall in its upstream catchment areas. The situation is being closely monitored by the local irrigation department to prevent any potential overflow or flood-related emergencies in the surrounding regions.
According to officials from the irrigation department, the water inflow at Head Marala was recorded at 121,233 cusecs on Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the outflow stood slightly lower at 117,885 cusecs, indicating a manageable discharge rate despite the increased volume of water.
The total flood capacity of the River Chenab at Head Marala is approximately 1,000,000 cusecs, placing the current water levels well within safe limits. However, officials warned that continuous rain in upper regions could lead to a further rise in the water flow over the coming days.
Irrigation teams have been deployed across the sensitive points along the riverbanks to keep watch on water behavior and strengthen embankments where necessary. Local authorities have also been alerted to stay prepared for any emergency evacuation or rescue efforts, if the water level unexpectedly surges.
Moreover, residents living near the riverbanks have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary movement near the water. Public announcements have also urged fishermen and small boat operators to suspend activities temporarily to ensure safety.
Although the current situation is under control, officials stressed the importance of early preparedness. The weather department has forecast more rain in the catchment areas, and with monsoon season approaching its peak, close coordination between departments remains essential to prevent future disasters.
