The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Thursday clarified that it has not yet invited any replacement team for the upcoming FIH Pro League. This announcement comes amid widespread media reports suggesting that Pakistan had been offered New Zealand’s spot after they reportedly declined to participate in the prestigious tournament.
FIH Senior Manager of Communications, Nicolas Mangot, explained that the tournament regulations clearly state the winner of the FIH Nations Cup earns the right to compete in the next edition of the Pro League. However, if the winning team decides not to participate, the runner-up team may be considered for the spot as a substitute.
Mangot further added that New Zealand, which secured the Nations Cup title recently, has not yet provided any official update regarding its participation in the Pro League. Consequently, no invitation has been formally extended to Pakistan or any other team at this time.
Earlier reports had created excitement among hockey fans in Pakistan after several outlets claimed that the country had been offered a place in the elite Pro League, following New Zealand’s possible withdrawal. However, the FIH’s latest statement firmly denies these claims and confirms that no final decision has been taken on any replacement.
As the hockey community awaits official confirmation from New Zealand and the FIH, the uncertainty continues around the lineup for the next Pro League season. The decision will significantly impact teams preparing for one of the sport’s top international competitions.
