During the third day of the first Test against England, the International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a warning to Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. ICC found Pant guilty of violating Level One of its code of conduct. As a result, he received one demerit point, which adds to his disciplinary record.
The incident happened when Pant, fielding close to the batsman, showed visible frustration after the umpire refused to replace the ball. Pant argued with the umpire about the ball’s condition and, after repeated denial, threw the ball on the ground angrily. This unsportsmanlike behavior drew immediate attention.
The ICC stressed that players must respect umpires’ decisions during matches and that such conduct is unacceptable. The warning aims to remind players to keep their emotions in check, regardless of the pressure in the game.
Pant’s reaction took place in a tense phase of the match, where every ball mattered, but the ICC urged players to maintain professionalism. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may also review the incident internally.
This disciplinary action serves as a caution for Pant and other players to uphold the spirit of cricket while focusing on their performance in the ongoing series. Pant is expected to avoid similar conduct in future matches to protect his reputation and team’s interests.
