The Israeli government is deeply concerned about the safety of around 2.6 million citizens who do not have access to secure shelters during the recent Iranian missile attacks. Many of these people cannot reach underground bunkers or other protected locations.
Israel has built protective shelters across most parts of the country for use in emergencies. However, recent reports revealed that millions of Israelis live in areas without proper access to these shelters, leaving them vulnerable to attacks.
According to the Israeli state comptroller, at least 2.6 million people live in unsafe zones. The comptroller visited Tel Aviv and nearby areas affected by Iranian strikes on June 16, warning the media that many citizens lack adequate protection from missile attacks.
The state comptroller also referred to a 2020 government report that identified serious gaps in civilian protection. Back then, about 2.6 million Israelis lived in places without safe shelters. Despite this warning, little progress has been made to fix the problem.
Especially in southern Tel Aviv, Neguev, and Arab towns, millions remain without access to safe shelters. These residents face higher risks as their homes offer no real protection in case of missile attacks, increasing potential casualties.
Northern Israel also faces a severe shelter shortage. Out of 39 towns in the region, 23 lack any proper public shelters. Many of the deadliest Iranian attacks happened in these vulnerable communities, including Tamra, Sakhnin, Majd al-Krum, and others, where no safe shelters exist.
Critics blame the Israeli government for not developing an effective plan to protect its citizens. As of now, many people continue living in highly insecure conditions with little government support to improve their safety during ongoing conflicts.
