Sir: A report has emerged of a landlord torturing two people on suspicion of theft in a village by the name of Kotla Rehmat Shah which is about 70 kilometres from Bahawalpur. According to the report, the landlord had two people beaten in the streets on suspicion of them stealing 5 kilograms of cotton. Firstly, this is not how one goes around punishing suspected criminals in a civilised country. Reports have to be filed with the relevant authorities and then it is up to the courts to decide the suspects fate. Hence what the landloed did was a serious crime. Secondly, this is not the first time a report has emerged of landlords being cruel and inhumane. I request the concerned authorities to take serious action against this landlord. He should be made example of so that powerful members of Pakistani society stop abusing the weak and downtrodden. SULEMAN AKHTAR Multan Published in Daily Times, October 24th 2017.
