ISLAMABAD: A petition seeking ban on the political activities of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif was filed in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday. The petition was filed by Dr Yasmin Rashid, a candidate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for NA-120 seat, which fell vacant after the disqualification of former premier Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court on July 28. The petition was filed through Dr Babar Awan a few hours prior to start of Nawaz Sharif’s rally from Punjab House to his hometown in Lahore via historic Grand Trunk (GT) Road. The petition, filed under Section 5 of the Political Parties Order 2002, requested the ECP to ban political activities of Nawaz Sharif who has been disqualified from holding any post in any political party of the country. The petitioner questioned Nawaz Sharif’s continued role in the PML-N after his disqualification under Article 62 of the constitution in the Panama Papers case. The petition requests the ECP to ban the political party carrying Nawaz’s name, besides declaring illegal the prime minister and his cabinet made by Nawaz. Published in Daily Times, August 10th 2017.
