Sir: Our NGO CSSP had a chance of visiting Rehri Goth, a small fishing community situated 17 kilometres from Korangi, Karachi, for a community services project. This visit was organised by the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF). The plight of people in the area was conspicuous with the lack of basic facilities — health, education and access to clean drinking water. However, the dismal health and hygiene conditions of the area, where people are already living below the poverty line, takes the cake. According to one of the office bearers at PFF, due to acute malnutrition, contaminated drinking water and unhygienic living conditions, Rehri Goth has a high percentage of children with disabilities. On the way to Rehri Goth, one can see tons of industrial waste and garbage dumped into the sea. The PFF official informed us that the locals of the coastal belt had to consume this contaminated water, which causes health problems such as skin diseases. Organisations from various social and developmental sectors are working towards the betterment of the residents of Rehri Goth. It is high time that the health ministry took notice of the health hazards, especially the ones causing disabilities among children in this area. SHEERIN Karachi
