Sir: At times, tough decisions are made for the interest and betterment of the country. However, for tough decisions, political will is required, which unfortunately is in short supply in our political and ruling circles. The way our economy is sinking and our dependence on foreign aid is increasing, the future is almost bleak and unpredictable. To come out of this self-created mess, our politicians and the ruling elite have to make tough decisions like curtailing government expenditure, restoring sovereignty by minimising dependence on foreign funding and aid programmes, spending more on education and compromising on the defence budget. There is a need to depoliticise the law enforcement agencies and bring them under the law. All this cannot happen unless we have the political will, which can only come once the focus shifts to managing the country selflessly and without personal interests. JAVAID BASHIR Lahore
